There’s a lot going on in your wardrobe right now.
Specifically, the fabric mix, and if you’ve ever checked a clothing label, you’ve probably spotted acrylic, polyester, nylon… all basically synonyms for plastic.
When I was building my own brand I made the conscious decision to believe the future of fashion is natural. Here’s why I choose natural fibres for all my sustainable knitwear, and why you might want to do the same.
1. They Simply Feel Better
Wool, cashmere, cotton, these are the fabrics you want against your skin. They breathe, they soften over time, and they don’t trap that awkward clammy feeling synthetic fibres can. You won't be taking your jumper on and off all day to be comfortable because natural fibres also regulate temperature, which means your knit can keep you cosy on a frosty Cotswolds morning and still be comfortable when the sun makes a surprise appearance, made for the unreliable British weather.
2. They Last Longer
Fast-fashion synthetics are built for a single season; natural fibres are built for years. With the right care, your favourite wool jumper can stick around for decades, getting better with age instead of sagging, pilling, or losing shape.
3. They’re Kinder to the Planet
Unlike synthetics, which are made from petrochemicals and shed microplastics with every wash, natural fibres are biodegradable. When they finally reach the end of their life (a long way off), they return to the earth without leaving a trace of plastic behind.
4. They Age Beautifully
Synthetic fibres tend to fade and fuzz; natural fibres develop a lived-in softness that feels even better over time.
We call it patina, but you can call it your favourite jumper being loyal.
5. They’re an Investment
Choosing natural fibres means you’re buying less, wearing more, and building a wardrobe that actually works. It’s the opposite of impulse shopping, it’s slow fashion with staying power.
Afternoon uses only natural fibres in our knitwear, crafted in London by skilled makers. Because when it comes to what’s next to your skin, the natural choice just makes sense.
